Letter from the President

Welcome to the 2020-21 Employee Council at Emory University!

I'm very excited and honored to serve as President for the year ahead. When I threw my name in the hat to become President-elect almost a year-and-a-half ago, I never would have anticipated the current state of Emory, our country, or our world at that time. Now here we are, more than halfway through 2020, a year that will be stamped in our minds forever. We are experiencing a global pandemic, political and social unrest at a national level, and an uncountable number of changes at Emory. We find ourselves in continual anticipation of what will happen next as we are faced with perpetual uncertainty, anxiety and instability. The way we are working has changed, the way we interact with colleagues had changed, and the way we will move forward will be along a path we have never taken before.

To guide us for the year ahead, our them for Employee Council for the 2020-21 academic year is Navigating Change TOGETHER. All representatives of employee council have a great opportunity to serve as leaders in their respective divisions as we work to help every employee feel equipped to navigate the everchanging landscape that is ahead of us, while retaining and building a connection to Emory that is long-lasting and strong.

Navigating. Employee Council will serve as a guide for staff to connect with all Emory has to offer. This will be achieved by promoting benefits, programs & resources; connecting staff to Emory offices & programs (ex. Arts @ Emory, Spiritual Life, LGBT Life, Athletics, Hardship Fund); and, highlighting timely initiatives as they arise throughout the year.

Change. Employee Council will serve as a bridge for the implementation of change. This will be achieved by listening to employee’s concerns and advocating for them during change; keeping staff aware of important changes that are relevant to them; and, ensuring visibility of employee council with Emory leadership.

Together: Employee Council will serve as community builders. This will be achieved by supporting Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion work across Emory; exploring ways to bring employees together; and, strengthening Employee Council membership.

My hope is that despite the change and chaos in the world around us, that we can be a positive force in the lives of our over 14,000 Emory University employees. I hope you will consider joining a sub-committee or working group in the year ahead to help contribute even more to these efforts.

I look forward to getting to know each of you better in the year ahead. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns, or just to talk. I can be reached by email melissa.morgan@emory.edu, phone 404-727-7243, and I use Microsoft Teams if you’d like to catch me for a quick chat.
